“The Applied Material Science and Technology of Constructional Materials”
The Department of Applied Materials Science and Technology of Constructional Materials has been organized and has been operating since October 1, 1983 according to the order of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics № 247-1 dated 1983.06.20 on the basis of the Sumy branch of the Lenin Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute.
The initial name of the Department is “Technology of constructional materials and material science”. The first Head of the department was appointed Ph.D., associate professor Pchelintsev V.

Pchelintsev Victor , Ph.D., Associate Professor. The first head of the Department. He began his career in Troitsk, Chelyabinsk region in August 1958 after graduating from the Dzerzhinsky Technical School of Railway Transport, Odessa. In 1962 he entered the Lenin Polytechnic Institute at the Faculty of Engineering Physics in Kharkiv. In the period from 1966 to 1968 he had an internship as a senior laboratory assistant at the Institute of Physics and Technology in Sukhumi, where he defended a diploma on “Study of the structure and properties of materials of current sources for space technology”. He graduated from the institute in 1968 with a degree in metal physics and worked at the Mobile Vehicle Engineering Institute in Sumy. At the research institute of the strength department he worked in positions from junior researcher to head of the structural analysis group where he gained production and research experience. In 1980 he completed exrtamulally postgraduate studies and defended his thesis on the specialty 05.16.01 “Metallurgy and heat processing of materials” at the Zhdanov Metallurgical Institute. The main scientific direction is the destruction of metals and increasing the structural strength by methods of volume and surface thermal mechanical impact on the product material. The results of scientific developments have been introduced in the oil and chemical industries of Ukraine and the CIS.
Solohubovskyi Valentyn
A graduate of the Sumy Higher Artillery Command School in 1941 - 1942, he fought in the Caucasus as part of the 350th Artillery Regiment, then as part of the 10th Army near Stalingrad. He took part in the liberation of Poland and fought in Germany. He is the retired lieutenant colonel. He was awarded with 3 orders of the Patriotic War of the I and II grades, 3 orders of the Red Star and 15 medals. He worked as a senior lecturer of Civil Defense discipline, Dean of the General Technical Faculty.
Lisin Volodymyr
He graduated from the Kyiv Artillery Special School, then the Artirelly School and served in the Precarpathian Millitary District. After graduating from the Artillery Engineering Academy in Moscow, he worked as senior lecturer of Sumy Artillery School. From 1970 to 1972 he was in Algeria on a special mission. Lisin V. worked at the university since 1978. as a lecturer. The total experience of his teaching work in higher educational institutions is 43 years. The laboratories established for molding, casting and welding were made with the direct participation of V. Lisin.
Rudenko Lidia – senior lecturer.
In 1963-1968 she studied at the Zhdaniv Metallurgical Institute, graduated from the Faculty of Metallurgy majoring in Metallurgy, Equipment and Heat Treatment Technology. Until 1971 she worked as a technological engineer at the Sumy Pump Plant; then until 1972 at the Mobile Vehicle Engineering Institute in Sumy as a senior engineer of the metallographic laboratory. From November she worked as an assistant at the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology, and since 1979 she has been working as a senior lecturer.
Lidia Fedorivna has been acting as the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering since 1977. She is one of the best lecturers of the university, for her long and conscientious work she was awarded with a high government award - the medal “For Labor Valor”.
Rab Valentyna – senior lecturer. In 1964 - 1970 she studied at the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute, majoring in Metal Physics. Valentyna Mykolaivna began her career as a senior engineer at the Mobile Vehicle Engineering Institute in Sumy in April 1970 at the Department of Material Strength, where she worked for 10 years in the laboratory of X-ray diffraction analysis. Since September 1980 she has been working at Sumy State University: first as an assistant, and since 1994 - senior lecturer. Valentyna Mykolayivna was repeatedly awarded gratitudes and received Certificates of Honor. She has recommended herself as an experienced, highly qualified, responsive lecturer.
From 1983 to 1997, the Department trained students of the Faculty of Engineering (~ 1200 people per year) in the disciplines: “Material Science” and “Technology of Constructional Materials”, as well as students of the Faculty of Economics and Humanitarian Faculty of the specialty “Management” and “Translation” from the discipline “System of Technologies” (~ 300 people per year).
Since 1993, Sigova V. has been elected the Head of the Department “Applied Material Science and Technology of constructural materials”.
Sihova Valentyna – Head of the Department of Applied Material Science and Technology of constructural materials from 1993 to 2009, Ph.D., Professor.
In 1950 she graduated from the Aviation and Metallurgical College in the Urals. From 1950 to 1963 she worked at the Omsk Electromechanical Plant as a technologist, then Head of the Thermal department and Head of the factory laboratory. During this time she graduated from the Siberian Road Institute without leaving work and postgraduate studies and defended her thesis on the specialty “Metallurgy and heat treatment”.
From 1974 to 1987 she headed the Department of “Technology of Metals, Refrigeration and Food Engineering” and was the first vice-rector of the Technology Institute in Kemerovo.
In 1985 she was awarded with the academic title of Professor at the Material Science Department.
Since 1987 she has been working at SSU as a Professor of the Department of Technology of Structural Materials and Material Science, since 1993 she has been the Head of the Applied Material Science and Technology of constructural materials Department. Also since 1990, she was the Dean of the Faculty of Advanced Training.
Research interests in the field of increasing the reliability and durability of machine parts by surface saturation of metals with alloyed elements to increase wear resistance, scale resistance and anti-corrosion properties. Most of the hardening technologies were introduced into production at 18 plants in the Soviet Union.
Under the guidance of Professor Sigova V. material and educational base for training specialists in the field of “Applied Material Science” was formed for the city and region industry.
From 1997 to 2002 by order of enterprises of Sumy region and Sumy students majoring in “Engineering Technology”, who were enrolled in the university in the 3rd year after graduating from the College of Mechanical Engineering, the Department conducted intensive training in “Materials Science in Mechanical Engineering” through courses by choice. Disciplines were learnt: “Methods of analysis and control of steels and alloys” (+Test), “Principle of alloying steels and alloys”, “Equipment of thermal work shops", “Technology of strengthening of steels and alloys” (+Course Project) and “Heat treatment of non-ferrous metals and alloys”. The Department participated in the implementation of diploma projects by these students in the special unit section (25-30% of the project volume). For the training of highly qualified personnel, a one-time postgraduate course was opened at the Department (headed by Assoc. Prof., Ph.D. Liubych O. Y.). The first graduate students of the department were graduates of our university Marchenko Stanislav and Pustovhar Oleksandr.
Since 1999, the Department trains graduate students on the basis of the Department of Material Science of Kyiv Polytechnic University (NTUU “KPI”).
According to the decision of the professional council of the Ministry of Education of November 19, 1998, the university was issued a license for the right to train specialists of the III level of accreditation of the specialty.

Yuskaev Volodymyr, Ph. D, Associate Professor of the Department.
In 1976 he graduated from Sumy Machine-Building Technical College, and in 1981 graduated from Sumy branch of Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute. He defended his dissertation in 1991.
He has been working at Sumy State University since 1991. Conducts all types of classes, course and diploma design. Scientific direction of Associate Professor Yuskaiev V.: study of influence and physical bases of friction, machine parts wear, friction and wear of materials with heterogeneous structure. Volodymyr Borysovych constantly takes part in the work of republican methodical and scientific technical conferences, symposiums.
Liubych Oleksandr , Ph.D., Associate Professor of the Department.
He graduated from the Ukrainian Correspondence Polytechnic Institute in Kharkiv. From 1965 to 1992 he worked at the Research Institute “Compressormash” in various scientific positions. In 1988 he defended his thesis on “Development of welded material and the process of strengthening the surface layer of the blade of a plow ploughshare made of high-strength cast iron” in the specialty 05.02.01 “Material science in mechanical engineering”.
Since 1992 he has been working at SSU at the Applied Material Science and Technology of Constructional
Materials Department.
Liubych O. gives lectures and conducts other types of training sessions.
The main scientific activities are:
- development of weld metal with a structure of gray and high-strength cast iron;
- development of welded metal resistant to abrasive wear of REM and titanium, as well as technology for strengthening parts;
- development of titanium cast iron resistant to abrasive wear and technology of its production.
Scientific developments of Associate Professor Liubich O. mastered at JSC “Sumy Research and Production Association named by Frunze”, OJSC Sumy plant “Centrolit”, OJSC Moscow plant “Borets” and others. (53 companies in total).
Budnyk Anatolii , Ph.D., Associate Professor
After graduating from the institute in 1974, he worked as a design engineer at a research institute. After military service in 1976 he worked in the research sector of the university; first as a senior engineer, and from 1978 to 1995 - a senior researcher.
From 1987 to 1991 he headed the branch research laboratory of sealing composite materials.
In 1993 at the Institute of Materials Science Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine he defended his thesis in two specialties – “Powder Metallurgy and Composite Materials” and “Friction and wear in machines”. Thesis topic is “Development of abrasion resistant three-component composite material based on fluoroplastic-4”.
He has been working at the Department since 1995, first as a senior lecturer, and since 1998 as an Associate Professor.
The main scientific directions of research works: tribotechnical materials science in the field of polymeric composite materials; technology for producing polymer composites; technology for obtaining products from polymer composites.
Vinnytska Valentyna , secretary and responsible for the library of the Department.
She was born on July 31, 1941. After graduating from high school she worked as a printer in the Regional Consumers’ Union from 1961 to 1971. From 1971 to 1987 she worked at the Project Institute in Sumy as the Head of the printing bureau. She has been working at the Applied Material Science and Technology of Constructional
Materials Department as a laboratory assistant since 1996. She works as the secretary of the Department and is materially responsible for the library of the Department. During the period of work at the Department she proved herself as a responsible employee, took a direct part in the production of a large number of textbooks, guidelines for laboratory work.
The first groups of the Department (MT-91, MT-01, MT-11) formed certain traditions, which later received support and development.
Students’ birthdays and nature trips are constantly held. The first in the university materials scientists began to celebrate the day of the Department
“Initiation in material scientists”. Students of the group MT-91 developed and presented the coat of arms of the specialty, which was later slightly modified by the group MT-01. Students of the group MT-01 composed the Anthem of Materials Scientists, and the first groups took the oath of materials scientists.
In 2003, the study group MT-91 was recognized by the University Student Competition Commission as the best group of the Engineering Faculty and took the 3rd place in the university competition in all types of competition.
Since 2002, students of the Department have been undergoing internships at the Mariupol Metallurgical Plant named by Ilyich and at the Azovstal Plant.
Scientific conferences and seminars are constantly held at the Department. Students are engaged in research and development in the areas of thermal and chemical thermal treatment, welding and surfacing of metals, powder metallurgy and polymer and composite materials.
From 2009 to 2011 Budnyk Anatolii was acting Head of the Department.
During this time, the Department has got a computer class (room 218, Central Building) with 11 work places, updated and supplemented computer seats for lecturers, as well as repairs to the laboratory were made (room 120, Central Building).

In 1997 he graduated from Sumy State University, majoring in “Compressors, pneumatic units and vacuum equipment”. From 1997 to 2000 he studied at the postgraduate course in the specialty 05.02.01 “Material Science”. The topic of the thesis is “Increasing the wear resistance of parts by surfacing of economically alloyed titanium containing iron carbon alloy”. He worked at the department as an engineer, Head of the laboratory and senior lecturer. In 2010 he defended his thesis.
From November 1, 2013, Diadiura Konstiantyn Oleksandrovych was appointed the Head of the Department.
